The Universal Periodic Review: Algeria is criticized by its peers The review of Algeria within the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) highlighted, on May 29th, 2012, the concerns of several UN member states with regard to restrictions to public freedoms and the unfair treatment of the dossier of disappeared persons.
The Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD), a regional federation of human rights organizations working directly on the issue of enforced disappearance in Asia, joins the international human rights community in strongly condemning the Algerian authorities for violently dispersing a protest by families of the disappeared persons in the country.
The Euro-Mediterranean Federation against Enforced Disappearances (FEMED) condemns the prohibition two days ago of the weekly meeting of mothers of the disappeared and deplores the acts of violence committed against them. The Euro-Mediterranean Federation against Enforced Disappearances (FEMED) rises up against the violent repression yesterday morning of mothers of the disappeared during their attempt to meet on the Addis Abeba plaza in Algiers. According to information sent by our two membership associations, the Collectif des familles de disparu(e)s en Algérie (CFDA) and Sos Disparu(e)s, an important number of policemen was deployed early yesterday morning around the usual meeting place of mothers of the disappeared who meet there every Wednesday for 12 years[1].
